A practical Sydney property owner checklist for burst pipes, stormwater, appliance leaks and flooded carpets.
Stop the source if it is safe
Turn off the relevant tap, isolation valve or mains water supply where possible. If water is near electricity, keep away and call a qualified electrician or emergency service provider first.
Document the damage before moving everything
Take clear photos and videos of affected rooms, flooring, furniture, skirting boards and visible water lines. These details can help property managers and insurers understand the event.
Remove standing water quickly
The longer water sits, the more likely it is to travel under carpet, into underlay, behind skirting boards or into adjoining rooms. Professional extraction and drying equipment can reduce secondary damage.
Do not assume carpet is dry because the surface feels dry
Moisture can remain in underlay, concrete, timber, subfloor materials and wall cavities. Moisture readings help identify what still needs drying.
Need professional help?
